Toguro Brothers Battle

A four-player action spectacle where the Toguro brothers join 9 other manga heroes in a battle without story constraints on the Mega Drive.

Yu Yu Hakusho Makyō Tōitsusen is a 1994 fighting game developed by Treasure and published by Sega for the Mega Drive. Based on Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, it features 10 playable characters including the Toguro brothers. Players can engage in one-on-one matches or utilize unique four-player simultaneous battle modes, competing across horizontal planes and utilizing special combos to deplete opponent health.

Lore & Background

The game features 10 key characters from the Yu Yu Hakusho series, including Yusuke Urameshi, Kurama, Hiei, Kazuma Kuwabara, Genkai, the Toguro brothers (Younger and Older), Chū, Jin, and Shinobu Sensui. Although the source manga follows Yusuke's transition from delinquent to spirit detective solving cases involving humans and demons, Makyō Tōitsusen does not adapt or tie into this plot. The game was produced during a global fighting game boom in the early 1990s, capitalizing on hits like Street Fighter II. Treasure initially developed the project as an original title named Axion before integrating the Yu Yu Hakusho license to ensure sales, though the underlying mechanics and multiplanar stage design were established beforehand.

In Their Own Story

Makyō Tōitsusen allows up to four players to compete simultaneously in a single match, a feature complemented by a second layer in each stage that lets fighters alternate between horizontal planes in the foreground and background. Matches have no time limit and utilize a health depletion system with short and long-range attacks. The game includes various multiplayer options such as battle royales, tag team matches, and a bracketed tournament mode where individual players, teams of two, or computer opponents can battle until a final championship match. Up to four human players can participate using Sega's Team Player multitap device.

Reader's Guide

Control schemes support both the three-button and six-button Mega Drive gamepads. On the three-button controller, 'A', 'B', and 'C' map to light attack, heavy attack, and guard respectively, while movement actions like dashing and shifting planes use directional pad combinations. The six-button controller allows mapping these six actions to individual face buttons. All characters can execute combos and unique special attacks on the ground or in the air, some of which are chargeable for increased damage. Certain abilities require 'spirit energy,' represented by a secondary gauge that refills by holding an attack button. A charged attack can be temporarily cancelled and stored by pushing back on the directional pad, then instantly unleashed later at full strength.
