Fifteen years before the story begins, Kurama was a Fox Demon who suffered severe injuries during a heist. To survive, he entered the embryo of a pregnant human woman, becoming Shuichi Minamino at birth. He grew to love his single mother and stayed in her world even when she fell gravely ill. Driven by desperation, he teamed up with demons Hiei and Goki to steal the Three Treasures, but ultimately betrayed them to seize the Mirror of Darkness (Ankoku-Kyō), also known as the "Forlorn Hope" in English dubs, for himself. This mirror could grant a wish at the cost of the user's life; Kurama used it to wish for his mother's cure, which would cost his life, but Yusuke intervened with the Spirit Orb before the sacrifice was completed. Initially unable to control his power fully, Kurama involuntarily reverted to his demon form during his fight with Touya in the Dark Tournament, not Roto. Later, he mastered the ability to transform at will for short periods. His signature weapon is the Rose Whip, a rose transformed into thorns capable of cutting steel, and he can create various demonic plants with formidable attributes.

Kurama's journey as Shuichi Minamino begins in modern Japan, where he hides his demon heritage while protecting his mother. When Yusuke Urameshi discovers his true nature during the theft of the Mirror of Darkness, their conflict ends not in death but in an uneasy alliance. Kurama assists Yusuke against The Four Beasts to reduce his sentence for crimes committed as a demon. He joins Team Urameshi alongside Hiei and Kuwabara for the Dark Tournament, where he temporarily reverts to his original Fox Demon form, known as Yoko Kurama in English dubs. Following their victory over Toguro's team, Kurama becomes intrigued by footage of humanity's crimes stolen by Shinobu Sensui. After witnessing Yusuke's death at Sensui's hands, Kurama's dormant demon powers fully awaken.
